Assignment for Monday, February 2

A new month, a new week, a new day, and a new lesson! This is a day of possibilities!!
This week we are focusing on what special talents we have and how we can use them to encourage others. We all have something we can do even if we are not the only one who has that ability. It doesn't have to be something showy or be a leadership role. As we learned is Dave's lesson last night, we are to serve one another in whatever way we can.
Be sure to start with the Ponder and Pray section, then answer the question on the first page and question #1.
Are we ready for a new memory verse? Let's try the verse at the beginning of this lesson.

1 Peter 4:10 As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.

I don't remember any useless or unusual gifts I have received.

#1. Romans 12:8 (in context with 6 & 7), tells us that there are various gifts given through grace and that we should use them. One of the gifts given is exhorting or encouraging. And to answer her question - I did know that is a gift given.

I will work on my memory verse throughout the day.

Okay, I am finally caught up for last week and today...whewwwww...

The most unusual gift that I have a story about (!) is the Christmas my mom gave my sister and me both a wok. Now, my sister immediately started using hers to produce delicious things, but I was paralyzed with fear over that silly appliance (always fear of failure with me)! Honestly, I didn't use that thing for at least two years...how ridiculous can you get?! Finally, my sister convinced me to just read the instruction booklet and try one of the recipes from it...and those have turned out to be some of my family's favorite meals! That got me to thinking about gifts that God has given me...I'm not sure, even at 50, what all of my gifts are, but one of the ones I DO have I have complained about for years...teaching. I have always had a knack for communicating ideas and for implementing creative ideas for children, but I never have appreciated this particular gift in myself. I don't enjoy teaching, it is mentally exhausting for me. So I have spent many years grudgingly using this gift, knowing it was my "responsibility" to use a gift, but a little aggravated that I must do so! Again, silly and very ungrateful. So I have made it my mission this week to express gratitude to the Lord for this gift He has graciously given to me AND to be TRULY grateful for it!

Does anyone else have a gift that they wish they didn't have or is that just me? I do have a tendency to be ungrateful sometimes...I will work on that!

We got a few useless gifts for our wedding (a coffee set w/small cups and saucers on this flimsy stand that finally fell and broke one day-it was cute but not practical) I am definitely into practical AND pretty.
I am sure glad encouraging is a spiritual gift...where would we all be without it? One person I really miss for this is Ed Holm-he could always read my face! He always seemed to know when I was having a really hard day and would come up and just tell me what a good job I was doing-it meant so so much to me!
And, the MV--I looked at it a few times, and all i know right now is that it is in 1 Pet (I think)

I totally forgot to post on Friday! I'm so sorry...I didn't have any earth-shattering answers though ;) The weirdest gift we've ever gotten was this HUGE glass leopard print vase from an extended family member for our wedding. Hmmm...I gave it to a friend who just loved it.
Ann, I love your honesty! And with kiddos in Bible class I'm SOO thankful for all the people who teach them even though it might not be their favorite thing, I'm so happy our for our boys to learn about God from other people who love Him!

I sympathize Anne! The one career I knew I would NEVER consider was teaching -- now I homeschool. But, as with many other things, we do what we feel we must when it comes to our children and there are blessings there whether they are things we particularly enjoy or not! :)

"As each one has received a special gift, let him use it..." I Peter ... Nope. Needs some work! :)

I have to admit that I have also felt the same way about some of the gifts God has given me, Ann. I think I'm learning as I grow older to just relax into them and stop fighting it. There really is joy to be found in a job well done even if you are tired of doing it or just don't want to do it right now. I think the person I have the most trouble with is myself most of the time. That whole attitude thing can really be a challenge!
