Assignment for Tuesday, February 3

Yep, I think this memory verse may be a little more challenging than the other two but it is really a practical verse and one that will motivate us to do the encouraging we know we should do, I hope. So keep on working on it. It's fun to read your progress!

Today's assignment is to answer questions 2 and 3.

As each one of you has received a gift,... something something... by the manifold grace of God 1 Pet 4:10

2. Considering the context of chapters 12, 13, and 14, it seems to me as if the Corinthians DID want spiritual gifts, but that perhaps they were being a bit competitive about it – acting as if a gift given to one was more important than those given to others. This was leading them to stray from the true purpose of gifts in the first place and to abandon a loving attitude toward one another. So this is what I got out of it: We should desire spiritual gifts, but we should recognize that everyone has their part to play – even those whose gifts are less obvious or “showy;” that without those differences in gifts, we could not function as a true body, but would become something horrific (like a five-headed Frankenstein! ) Paul said that prophecy was a greater gift than speaking in tongues (14:1) because prophecy is for edification, exhortation and consolation (14:3). Above all, we should practice love in the use of our gifts, because without love, even prophecy and the ability to speak tongues means nothing useful to God or our brothers and sisters.
3. The purpose of gifts is the edification (building up, strengthening) of the church. Verse 12 repeats what he said in verse 3.

"As each one has received a special gift, let him employ it in serving one another, according to the manifold grace of God." I Peter 4:10
...left out good stewards and added "let him" unnecessarily.
