Assignment for Wednesday, May 20

Today we begin to look at what "agape" love is. I imagine this will be familiar to you, but try to slow down as you do your homework to think about what this really means and how you can apply it to your life. I would encourage you to read the first passage (1 Cor 13) out loud slowly, stopping to think after each verse. If you are like me, you will maybe feel a little toe-stomping going on but also an encouragement to do better.

Ah-oh. Ann must be having a busy day. I'll post for her in the morning if she hasn't had a chance to do so herself. Meanwhile, let me compliment you on your memorization! I think this must have been an easy one for you.

Sorry I'm so late guys! Here's my answers, although I must admit it is hard for me to dwell on a passage in a "new" light when I have studied it so many times in my life...I am trying though, to give it a fresh look...

I always feel challenged and overwhelmed when studying agape love.

If my gifts don't express love, I am nothing.

Agape is...
longsuffering, kind, rejoicing in truth, bearing all things, believing all things, hoping all things, enduring all things

Agape is not...
envious, puffed up, parading itself, rude, selfish, easily provoked, thinks no evil, does not rejoice in iniquity, never fails

In Romans 12, it is correct that we should make every effort to live peaceably, #2 is incorrect because it doesn't say God is not angered, but "vengeance is mine", #3 is incorrect because we should bless and not curse our enemies, #4 I was a little confused..."overcome evil with good" is the verse...I wasn't sure about the "most likely" part...?

Proverbs 25 adds "and the Lord will reward you" to the heaping coals of fire on their heads

In Acts 7:9 envy lead to slavery for Joseph

I Cor. 1:27-29, God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise so that no flesh should glory in His presence

The only grounds for boasting is in the Lord

Uzziah transgressed against the Lord and became a leper

the proud does not seek God; God is in none of his thoughts

the proud will be ashamed

Dan. 5 - throne taken away and his glory

Obad. 3 - The Lord told the nation of Edom that they were very proud but he was going to bring them down

Jer. 13 - The Lord weeps over his flock being taken captive

2 Chron. 32 - Hezekiah repented of his pride and the Lord's wrath did not come upon the nation during his lifetime.

Whenever I have a quarrel with a loved one, pride is usually involved somewhere!
