Assignment for Wednesday, July 1

Can you believe it is already July!?! Well, it is.

I am appreciating the way the author is presenting gentleness. My dad used to say the word refers to the same thing we mean when we say a horse has been gentled. I'm not sure if that term is still used today, but basically it means that the horse is still strong and has his own opinion but has chosen to submit himself to the owner. The horse is tame. We also are to be tame.

I am still looking at study options. One that Brooke mentioned last week is Colossians and Philemon: Continue to Live in Him, Living Word Bible Studies which you can examine at www.cbd.com . This one looks like a good study and is divided in a way that will be easy for us to use. Let me know what you think. I probably should order SOMETHING by the beginning of next week.

One last note, I think I can speak for all of us when I say that you are in our prayers, Sarah and Brooke, as you travel and mourn your grandmother.

Week Nine, Day 3

God's commands in James 1 are to turn away from evil and accept His Word

Paul's relationship with Aquila and Priscilla was as coworkers

They accompanied Paul to Ephesus

After Paul left Ephesus, Apollos comes to the city

Verse 24 says that Apollos was an eloquent man, mighty in the scriptures

Apollos taught boldly and fervently but he only knew the baptism of John

P and A taught Apollos more accurately about Jesus and the gospel

We can infer that P and A were taught by Paul (although it's possible they were already disciples when he joined himself to them and that was another thing they had in common)...it never specifically says that Paul taught them

Apollos immediately began teaching with his new knowledge and and refuting the Jews

I couldn't think of any specific examples of when I have been taught "more accurately", but I know there have been several times in my life when I have been confronted with a long-held belief that has turned out to be an opinion I was taught, not scripture. It took time for me to accept something different from what I had been taught my whole life (imagine how hard it is for people coming out of different religions!). Throughout my life, I have had kind of the opposite problem of believing everything I hear (yes, I'm very gullible and trusting)...I could be convinced of almost anything when I was younger if the argument sounded logical. But by studying the scriptures and "testing the spirits" I have, over the years, learned to make my own decisions and not just accept someone else's word on things...it has been a real blessing to me to have a husband with a good amount of common sense, who thinks things through very thoroughly. He's been a good example for me!

In Numbers 22, we see the story of Balaam and his donkey, where the donkey sees God's angel standing in the way with a sword...the first time she turns aside into a field and Balaam strikes her, the second time she pushes into a wall to squeeze by and crushes Balaam's foot and he strikes her again (I'd probably be upset at that one too), the third time the way is too narrow to get around the angel so she lays down and Balaam beats her with his staff. God opened the donkey's mouth to speak...God was angry with Balaam because he was willing to "prophecy" anything for money. Balaam admitted his sin, God told him to only speak what he was instructed, then Balaam finally told Barak that he could only speak what God put in his mouth.

The last question is obvious. Haven't we all had times when we were stubborn and refused to listen to God? I would be amazed if someone answered that one "no".

Happy Thursday, Ladies!

Mom wanted me to let you all know that she has a migraine today and will not be able to set up a new post for today as she can't stand to look at the computer screen. So just put your comments under this post for now.

Thanks!

Sarah and Brooke: I'm also praying for you and your parents.

I'm done with Wednesday's study and will get myself caught up with today's study sometime today.

The Phillipians/Colossians study sounds great to me too.
